Ice dancers Nick Buckland and Penny Coomes ready to emerge from the shadows of Torvill & Dean
They were 20th in their Olympic debut in Vancouver and slowly started to inch their way up the world rankings, securing a 10th place in Sochi four years ago, just a few weeks after winning bronze at the European Championships. Success in ice dancing is never overnight. And then, during a practice session that summer, Coomes suffered a horror fall and smashed her knee into eight pieces, an injury most thought would end her career.
Coomes and Buckland danced to the same short programme that Torvill and Dean performed when they won bronze at the Lillehammer Games, the last time British figure skaters won an Olympic medal.

Please refresh the page and retry. Ever since, there has been a barren quest for a repeat. Torvill and Dean tried themselves, at Lillehammer , but received only a bronze for their troubles. Years of medical struggle would have sunk a less redoubtable duo. It is not just that Buckland underwent life-saving heart surgery in the lead-up to Sochi four years ago, with a monitor the size of a USB stick implanted in his chest, or that Coomes suffered a bout of pneumonia that meant they missed the world championships in Shanghai.
The crisis that threatened to derail it all came when Coomes, attempting a routine lift during training in Michigan, shattered her knee in eight places. S he remembers little of the subsequent flight to the UK, although Buckland, her partner off the ice as well as on, recalls how she screamed all the way from the airport to the hospital. While doctors successfully inserted wires to stabilise the knee, they informed her soberly that she would never skate again.
It was this thought that moved her to tears after judging on Monday, when the couple earned a score of I have been through two surgeries and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It was an all-time low, the hardest thing I have ever endured. While I wish it had never happened, I found a lot of inner strength. Given how hard we have had to fight, it means more to be here. A s part of her convalescence, Coomes submitted to intensive hydrotherapy, a leap of faith for an athlete who has an aversion to water borne of a pathological fear of sharks.

Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland are engaged.
We are spending our summer on the ice, training in New Jersey, USA, getting our Olympic programmes choreographed and working off the ice with specialist dancers and acrobats. This year we have to dance a quickstep themed programme. We have completed essential work on the floor with ballroom coaches to create an authentic routine. Nick and I spent weeks preparing this programme on the floor with specialist hip hop dancers who have toured and starred in many MJ shows.
Our struggles have been putting the lifts we created on the floor onto the ice, we have had to adapt, but we hope that each lift has its own wow factor. My biggest tip would be to start your day with some protein.
It falls to Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland, a couple on and off the ice, to try to follow in the immaculate tracks of Torvill and Dean 30 years on.
T he Winter Olympic games in PyeongChang, South Korea, will be an extravaganza of cold weather sports, over which the real-life couples of ice skating will arguably take the center stage. So perhaps it should come as no surprise that many of the figure skating and ice dancing pairs at the Winter Olympics are couples both on and off the ice — after all, partners that skate together, stay together. Both skated with other partners beforehand but what will make this Olympics even more special is that this will be the first games that the pair will be competing as a real-life couple.
In an interview with NBC , Evan shared that he thinks this Olympics will be momentous for the both of them. While Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue are no longer together, the pair dated for two-and-a-half years despite initially not liking one another as partners on the ice. Ahead of the intense preparation for the Winter Games, the ice dancing pair decided it was best to split up. We had to ask ourselves what was more important, our on-ice partnership or our off-ice relationship?
And we were both very clearly said the on-ice partnership is No.

From the outside, the Michigan-based duo’s preparations for these Games have been far from ideal — from Coomes smashing her knee into several pieces following a training accident in June to failing to hit top gear at last month’s European Championships.
There was the life-saving heart surgery for Buckland in the run up to Sochi and the bout of pneumonia for Coomes that meant they missed the World Championships. And that’s before examining in more detail the smashed kneecap which forced Coomes into three months of bed rest and two operations.

It is the event in which Britain has a winter tradition like no other, one in which those who seek admittance will always be judged on their ability to achieve the impossible. It falls to Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland, a couple on and off the ice, to try to follow in the immaculate tracks of Torvill and Dean 30 years on from what remains a seminal moment in British sporting history.
Three days later, Coomes and Buckland — who compete today in the team competition, a box-ticking event in which Britain have no chance — begin their ice dance programme aiming some way short of perfection. Of the nine Winter Olympic golds won by Britain, four have gone to figure skaters there was a fifth from the Games when it was part of the summer programme. One of them, Robin Cousins, is here as a team ambassador, a daily reminder of the standards that the current generation have to aspire to.
But it always comes back to Torvill and Dean, and Coomes and Buckland do have one trick up their billowing sleeves. He has coached the Britons for the last four years. I can be very strict. Off the ice I can be your buddy, brother, mother, father, whatever you want me to be. Platov is a bullish advocate of the Soviet system that made him, one that has at its core sheer hard work, hour after hour on the ice from the age of nine onwards. We have learnt so much from him.
How did they beat us? We were the best team in the world.
